Young Adult: The Dead and The Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

This is a companion novel to the book Life As We Knew It,  that I read a couple years ago.  In both books, the plot deals with a family who has survived the results of the moon being knocked closer to the Earth.  Think about how the tides would change, the pull on magma under the Earth’s surface would increase, as it would on fault lines.  Life As We Knew It focuses on a family in a rural Pennsylvanian town, and The Dead and the Gone looks at a Catholic, Hispanic family in New York City.  They both made me want to stockpile food and batteries, especially with the asteroid coming so close to Earth on Monday!  There are no happy endings in these books, but the hope for a better day never ceases.  There are small details that didn’t make sense–for example, how does the water stay on without payment?  This World We Live In is the last book in this series, and I’ll be looking for it soon.
