The Sledding Hill by Chris Crutcher

Another young adult book by another terrific author.  He writes hard-hitting young adult fiction, and tackles tough issues that many other authors wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole.  Often, many of those issues are all in the same book.  This one adds an interesting touch by incorporating the censorship of Chris Crutcher’s books as the storyline of The Sledding Hill.  Of course, that’s only one of the plot lines.  The book is narrated by a dead teenager, which is kind of fun.   The main character, who sounds ADHD but is not diagnosed, loses his supportive dad and his best friend in 3 months’ time…and he finds them both.  He shuts down his voice in response.  So, throw in some very conservative Christians, a book with a gay guy as the main character, an “interesting” view of Cain, and a fabulous school librarian, and you get a fairly wild ride.
