First book of the weekend

I picked up The Year We Disappeared by Cylin Busby and John Busby, and couldn’t put it down.  John was a police officer whose lower face was shot off in retaliation from a criminal.  The police department was corrupted (still is, it sounds like), and his whole family was thrown into chaos for the following year.  Fearing another attack on John and his family, they were constantly in fear for their lives.  Cylin sounds like she’s about my age, so I was thrown back in time a little, too.  Their story is told in alternating chapters between 9 year-old-Cylin’s point of view, and John’s point of view.  It’s an easy read, very focused, with great voice.  It’s horrific, though, to think that corruption like this still happens.
