Thinking about middle school today

DD is getting ready to move up next year, and I’m making decisions.  I’ve decided to put her back in the district where we live instead of a block away from where I work.  She’ll be in 6th grade, and will have been gone for a year and a 1/2.  Having worked in a middle school, I’m convinced they are the worst years no matter where the kids are.  I loved teaching 6th and 7th, and really enjoyed the humor (go figure) and emerging maturity.  But, oh, the cat fights and the manipulation and the sneakiness…it’s just awful!  And now, I’m trying to balance gangs, drugs, bullying, gifted ed, and insight into the school as a whole.  Nothing much at stake–just my child’s well-being and future!
